Day 2

Skyros 2020 · 05. October 2020

Picking, cutting and cooking

We start the day with Karin, our hostess or at our accommodation. Together we take a little bit care of tidying up. This includes sweeping the front yard so that not all leaves are lying around, watering the plantation and picking the mandarins from the ground as well as from the trees. Our job is to prepare jam for sale. The quinces are washed and cut, it is important to make sure that the inner core and any imperfections are cut away. In total we have prepared 4.5 kilograms of quinces so that Karin can cook them directly. In addition to this, we have collected mandarins from the garden, which are also washed and cut. It is an instructive day for both of us, as well as a good opportunity to get to know each other. In the afternoon we go up to the school with the others. There they are busy with painting in classrooms.

Old well known

Today we can move into our office after some clarifications. This is at the same place as last year and therefore everything is still known, even the internet works at first go. A first inventory of the equipment is being made and we have already installed the first devices. This is also thanks to the help of Giulia and Lorena. In the late afternoon we support the painting team in the school.

Music resounds

At 10 am the music teacher visits us in our room. We have again brought many instruments for the small music school. Drums, xylophones, flutes and a drum set. Since the music room is very small and there is still a big table plus an office workstation in this room, the music school has hardly any space left. That is also the reason why they could not use the drums we brought last year. Tomorrow we hope that a part of it will come out of this room and then the music school will have a little more space, so we might be able to set up the drumset. But since we have brought another drum set this year and it will surely not find a place anymore, we brought it to the island’s psychologist (whom we have known since the last times) in the afternoon. He can also play drums and will work together with the music school in the future, so that he can teach a few children to play drums.

Getting work done

This morning we went first of all to the building authority and got some painting tools, because we have several painting orders today. We are allowed to inspect the house of an old man near the harbour of Skyros, which we will repaint. We went to a painter’s shop and bought all materials. After the painter’s shop we go to a farm to visit old machines. We do this because we got the order from a friend. Unfortunately Manuel has to realize that it is impossible to repair them. With all the materials and new information we go to the town of Skyros to have lunch with everyone. Since lunch was cancelled a little later, we had to hurry to get to our construction site. We are allowed to paint two classrooms in the school. At first sight these rooms look like in Switzerland. Only when you take a closer look do you notice the plaster falling off the walls or the broken tables. We started out with six of us, but this construction site quickly became an entire team effort. Exhausted and partly still hungry, we sat down in a restaurant, had a snack and let the evening come to an end in the small town.
