Day 5

Group project
Today we got out of the house early and hit the trail without a morning meal. We made a hiking trail passable again. Before we started with the work, we went to Edi’s house where we had breakfast. Edi is an acquaintance who emigrated from Germany and now works in the area of water and nature for the island. After the morning meal we left, one group started at the stairs and the other group started at the top. The group that was at the stairs also moved further up after finishing. We separated the group again and one went further up and the other finished the rest at the bottom. During the work it suddenly starts to rain in torrents. The lower group sought shelter and those further up continued to work despite the heavy rain. After the rain, the lower group finished the rest and then went back to Edi. A little later the other group came back as well. We handed in the tools and walked to the car. Some of us were allowed to go directly to the accommodation by car, the others walked to the village, where we were picked up. Back at the accommodation some went directly to the shower and others went to the sea. Today we enjoyed lunch at Karin’s place. After lunch we had free time. Some went to sleep, others talked outside. In the evening we went up to the village and ended the evening together.

Michi as drum teacher
Today was the next round of drum lessons. After yesterday another student came today. The lessons are a lot of fun for the students. The communication is mainly based on English. Meanwhile I know a few words in Greek, which are important for the lessons. Today’s student has been playing the drums for a long time. Tomorrow there is another lesson planned and I am already looking forward to it.

Visit to the doctor on Skyros
My day started like it ended yesterday…. With pain. I broke a tooth yesterday while eating. Müri and Däni persuaded me to go to the dentist. I resisted, because I had seen the hospital and was already sure not to take medical help here on the island. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this dentist. Since I otherwise already have an aversion to dentists, it was not conducive to the fact that I almost do not understand this one. However, he was very friendly and open to explain everything to me in great detail. After he made me a temporary filling, I explained to him again what we at Swiss for Greece do here on the island. Of course, a photo with the dentist should not be missing. I am looking forward to tonight, when I can finally eat a gyros!

Job comparison
Today I was allowed to visit the hospital on the island. I was accompanied by the nurse. She is the only one here on the island and has to take over some of the doctors’ work, because otherwise they have too much to do. The patients cannot stay overnight in this hospital, because there are only emergency beds. The patients come to the hospital as the first point of contact. They are met at the front door and their temperature is taken. The patients wear a mouth guard and so do we. The patients are examined without any hygienic measures, intimate sphere protection and ergonomic working methods. They dress the wounds dripping with blood without gloves and with very old methods. The conditions and payments are very bad, the nurse tells me. The money is barely enough to live on. They work regular hours, but they also have to be available at all times. Only small things are done in this hospital, otherwise the patients are sent to bigger hospitals. The visit was very impressive and I learned to appreciate more our health care system.

A give and take
This afternoon I did not have much free time. Together with Giulia we were driven up to the city by Däni. We had an appointment with Dimitri, with whom Giulia had already been on Tuesday. We were able to give him and his wife a computer and a new printer. Since he is an English teacher, communication was no problem. He has several projects on the island himself and thinks ours is very good. He even offered to translate a part of the website into Greek. So now it will be accessible for the locals as well.
