The week was a gift
Despite difficult conditions due to the Corona pandemic, the Swiss for Greece task force was able to travel to the Greek island of Skyros via Athens. From 3 to 10 October, the 12-member group carried out their planned work there.
Thanks to the local contact group, the young volunteers were able to quickly plan their tasks and get into action. Painting and gardening, computer installation, medical assistance, distribution of relief goods and donations, social outreach and much more. Many of the young people used their talents and professionalism, but also got to know each other in other fields of work. Pascal, a member of Swiss for Greece, says: «We were able to bring huge joy to an old man by painting a living room. The laughter and joy are my highlight from this week. It motivates me to give my holidays to this project again next year.»
Three confirmands from the Steckborn parish (F 17+) were also integrated into the project. They were able to experience at first hand that being a Christian is not just words, but also requires action. The atmosphere in the group was great. This was also noticeable from the outside. The sense of this project became clear to many: it creates a win-win situation, one helps and is given a gift. «Of course, it is something completely different than meeting every week and having a theme evening. It is an experience you will never forget, and you learn a lot for yourself and your own life,» says Giulia, a confirmand from Steckborn.
This week, Swiss for Greece was also able to win other reference persons on the island for cooperation. The network is getting bigger and so is the recognition of the work done. «We are pleased that it is clear to everyone that this project must continue. So we can now start planning Skyros 2021,» the project team agrees. This will again require many actions and collections. It is therefore important that many parishes and private individuals support the project.

Two projects combine
Recently, around 40 people met under «Corona Safety Measures» to look back on the «swissforgreece» week on Skyros and an information evening for the confirmands with godparents and confirmation sponsors. It is a special path that the eight confirmands from Steckborn and the surrounding area have chosen. They are involved in the JUSESO TG aid project «swissforgreece», which provides local help for the people in need on the Greek island of Skyros.
Why do young people work for the people in need? Why do they take a week’s holiday for it? Why do they collect money and relief supplies? These are the questions that the young people in the confirmation course explored. A basic Christian attitude has to do with action. Charity and solidarity are not just words, but require action. In the fellowship of the group, both could be experienced and put into practice at first hand. Being a Christian is not a «self-runner», but also a mission, it needs a level of action.
With pictures and sound, the young adults of the «swissforgreece» group informed about the projects in the run-up and of course also from the week of outreach on the island. In this way, the confirmation sponsors, parents, friends and other interested people could learn how donations were used on site. Much amazement, thanks and praise were certainly a nice reward for this outreach.
