The Swiss for Greece project
Diaconal project of the Catholic Church of Thurgau
We learn the important things in life through experience. What we see or experience ourselves becomes engraved in our own life plan. Most young people here in Switzerland have a good, positive starting position to develop their lives and realise their life’s aspirations.
But most of them also know that this is not the case everywhere. We are informed about this every day by the media. One could help everywhere. We wanted to open up two opportunities for young people through our own diaconal project.
- We are organising a specific action in a country that has got into a very difficult situation due to various circumstances and where many people are in a precarious living situation. A large part of the Greek middle class is impoverished and lives at the subsistence level or below! Many sad fates are being created. We can provide material support and set an example through our commitment, live solidarity.
- Young people should be personally affected. Experience helping and develop a new outlook on life. Be proud of your own actions! Allow emotional closeness, endure it and draw strength from it. Participate in something “good”.
We were able to achieve both goals in our local work in Athens and on Skyros. It also seems important to us that the young people do not see this project as a “flash in the pan”, as a nice episode in their lives, but in their collection campaigns before the mission, as well as now as a group “swissforgreece” is interested in continuing it.
